About GAU

The dance theatre Ensemble GAU Company (then under the name GenerationAndereUmstände) was founded by Nadine Freisleben in 2013.

It started as a collective of 5 international dancers and choreographers: Rodolfo Piazza de la Silva, Ronja Häring, Sergio Verano, Lioba Kaszemeik and Nadine Freisleben. From 2016 on, Nadine Freisleben overtook the main management and started to give her focus on multidisciplinary art. From 2016 until 2018 Lioba Kaszemeik co-directed the company. Today, Nadine Freisleben handles GAU Company as an art factory that produces dance theatre pieces as in-house productions or in collaboration with other artists of all backgrounds.

The multidisciplinary focus is represented in every work. The term generation generally implies a group of a certain age. GAU Company subverts this interpretation by using it to describe the products as a certain social or political environment.

GAU Company seeks to contrast the concept of performative staging with the individual reality of the performers. The pieces are each a multidisciplinary collaboration of different artists, musicians, actors, poets, acrobats, etc. and dancers.

GAU Company works with the performer´s individuality, cultural and artistic background and personality in order to encourage the full awareness of the dance-theatre pieces they are part of. Their personal experiences, their origin and culture and consequently their whole being is manifested on stage. A real person is showing their inner self through their art form within a performative surrounding. The audience is able to see a performed reality to identify themselves with the story being transmitted through art.

All of GAU Company´s dance theatre pieces are having socio-critical aspects that deal with the interior and exterior borders of a human or, as a consequence, a nation. Those boundaries promote fear towards strangers and recursively to fear towards oneself.

Through the boom and flash of social media and as a consequence of the never ending showers of information the current society develops a performative manner, which not only flakes the factual but, also obscures the needs of a society. Modern modalities diminish the behavioural and cognitive patterns of an individual towards him- or herself. Taken further and mixed with the common protective fear of losing what belongs to the one construct of society, those thinking patterns also turn against strangers, people who have different mindsets or who don´t fit into the standard deviation from the norm. Under the rule of the common protective fear, those people are rather considered as untrustworthy and priority is given to personal and national advantages.

The artistic focus of the Company ́s work lies on multi – and interdisciplinarity artforms. It has become an international platform for different artists, such as musicians, actors, dancers, acrobats and sound designers. The goal is to create performances that are holistic in their artistic message and are able to reach out to different environments. Additionally, GAU Company seeks to work with different artists to have the possibility of sharing and exchanging knowledge and artistic approaches.
